Building a Strong and Diverse Team

Yoohaina Edwards, Head of People and Culture, shares her perspective on how important it is to build diverse teams that thrive.

Why does diversity, understanding and meaningful collaboration matter more than fast growth or quick hires, and how this approach has fuelled innovation across Applica.

Yoohaina emphasises the importance of understanding each individual’s strengths, motivations and aspirations. “Building a strong team is not about fast growth” she explains. “It is about finding the right people and creating a space where they can thrive.”

For Yoohaina and the wider Applica team, diversity is never a compliance exercise or a box to tick. It is a strategic advantage.

Different backgrounds and perspectives drive creativity and innovation, which are essential in an industry navigating rapid technological change. “We do not want everyone to think the same” she says. “We want people to bring their whole selves.”

This mindset fosters openness and shared growth. It encourages healthy challenge and new ideas. Most importantly, it creates a culture where people feel respected, included and empowered.

Yoohaina highlights that culture is shaped by behaviour, not slogans. Openness, respect and collaboration only matter when they are practised daily.

These values guide how teams work together and how they support their clients and consultants. The result is an environment where people feel seen and trusted, and where their contributions make a genuine impact.

She adds, “When people feel seen and empowered, real impact happens.” It is a long term approach, but one that creates resilient, motivated teams ready to deliver across the energy transition.
