Piping Designer
The opportunity
As a Piping Designer, you will play an important role in the development and modification of piping systems for complex industrial facilities. Much of our current work is brownfield, requiring designers to understand existing installations, work within physical constraints and develop practical solutions that can be safely fabricated and installed. Candidates with predominantly greenfield experience are also encouraged to apply where they can demonstrate strong piping design and 3D modelling capability.
You will work closely with piping leads, engineers, surveyors, fabrication teams and multiple engineering disciplines to take designs from concept through to issued-for-construction deliverables.
This is a highly collaborative position where communication, technical judgement and the ability to work effectively as part of a close-knit team are just as important as software capability.
What will you be doing?
Your responsibilities may include:
- Develop and modify 3D piping models, equipment layouts, piping supports and associated design elements using AVEVA E3D and other engineering design software.
- Generate and review piping isometrics for fabrication and installation.
- Develop detailed piping support designs and fabrication drawings.
- Interpret and apply P&IDs, engineering drawings, specifications and project requirements.
- Perform model reviews and design checks to ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards and client requirements.
- Coordinate closely with Structural, Electrical, Instrumentation, Process and other engineering disciplines to resolve clashes and design interfaces.
- Work with surveying and dimensional-control teams to incorporate accurate field information
- Utilize laser scan / point-cloud survey information where available to support brownfield design.
- Liaise with fabrication teams and local fabrication facilities to resolve constructability and fabrication-related queries.
- Support the planning team with technical information required for the development of construction and maintenance work packs.
- Participate in design reviews, coordination meetings and client discussions.
- Communicate directly with major clients and stakeholders where required, presenting and discussing design solutions confidently and professionally.
- Support fabrication yard or site visits when required to verify dimensions, resolve design issues or support project execution.
- Manage multiple priorities while maintaining quality and accuracy against demanding project schedules.
What we are looking for
We are flexible on industry background and are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate strong design fundamentals and experience working with relevant engineering software.
Typical experience levels are:
- Junior: Approximately 3–4 years of relevant piping/design experience.
- Intermediate: Approximately 5+ years of relevant experience.
- Senior: Approximately 10+ years of piping design experience.
We would like you to have:
- Technical college diploma in Engineering Design/Drafting Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Previous experience in piping design within an industrial engineering environment.
- Strong experience using 3D CAD / plant design software.
- Ability to read, understand and interpret P&IDs.
- Experience developing piping models, layouts and isometrics.
- Understanding of standard engineering design-office practices, workflows and document control requirements.
- Ability to coordinate effectively across multiple engineering disciplines.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
- Strong attention to detail and a practical approach to resolving design challenges.
- Ability to remain organized and effective when working to aggressive schedules or changing project priorities.
Software experience
Experience with AVEVA E3D is particularly valuable as this is a key platform used within the team.
Experience with any of the following is also highly relevant:
- AVEVA E3D
- PDMS
- AutoCAD
- MicroStation
- Navisworks
- Comparable 3D plant-design or CAD platforms
Direct E3D experience is advantageous but not essential. Candidates with strong experience in comparable 3D modelling systems will be considered.
Experience that will make you stand out
While not essential, we would be particularly interested in candidates with experience in:
- Brownfield modification or retrofit projects.
- Offshore oil and gas facilities.
- Working within congested existing plant environments.
- Dimensional-control surveying.
- Laser scanning / point-cloud surveys.
- Field verification and site surveys.
- Fabrication or construction support.
- Pipe support design.
- Model checking or design checking.
- Client-facing technical meetings.
- Shutdown, turnaround or other schedule-critical project environments.
The team
You will be joining an established and highly experienced piping group with significant knowledge of the assets and clients they support. The team works closely together and maintains strong relationships both within piping and across the wider engineering organization. Because the role requires daily interaction with designers, engineers, surveyors, planners, fabrication teams and clients, being a genuine team player is critical.
We are looking for someone who:
- Communicates openly and confidently.
- Builds strong working relationships.
- Is willing to ask questions and share knowledge.
- Works collaboratively rather than in isolation.
- Remains calm and solutions-focused under schedule pressure.
- Can adapt quickly when project priorities change.
- Is comfortable interacting directly with clients and senior stakeholders.
